Many of you in Broward County probably received a mailing called ‘The Blue Card’ with endorsements for the August 30th primary for the Democratic Party. This card was not sent out by the Broward Democratic Party. They have confirmed that they do not endorse during primaries nor do they endorse non-partisan candidates (i.e.: judges).
This card was produced by the “Florida’s Democracy Project.”
At the time of my research, there was little information about this card, but there was enough to realize that this is a bogus attempt to sway voters to certain candidates.
Other than the endorsed candidates, there is only one name on the card. Actually, it was an email address; jgoodwinNBDC@gmail.com with a phone number. A little research and you find that Joanne Goodwin is the president of the Northern Broward Democratic Club and her name was used on this card without her permission.
“I am outraged that Dan Lewis put my contact information on this card without my knowledge or permission. I hope that voters do not mistake my name on the card as an endorsement or rejection of the candidates listed.” – Joanne Goodwin, President, Northern Broward Democratic Club
The Broward Democratic Party has also condemned the mailing.
“I want to make it very clear to voters that the Democratic Party is in no way connected to the ‘Blue Card’. This is an underhanded tactic that tarnishes the Democratic process. I have no knowledge that anyone who appears on the card is responsible for the actions of Mr. Lewis. Candidates should not be unfairly associated with this type of behavior.” – Cynthia Bush, Broward Democratic Party Chair
The card’s return address is: Florida’s Democracy Project, 460 N Victoria Park Road, Ft. Lauderdale, Florida 33301.
Turns out, this address is a private home owned by Daniel and Cheryl Lewis. (Verified on Google Navigation and Broward County Property Appraiser)
Who is behind the Florida’s Democracy Project?
Well, of course, it is Dan Lewis. But further investigation brings up the Committee Tracking System from the Florida Division of Elections. [Link here]
Florida’s Democracy Project is an “Active” Political Committee located at … you guessed it … Dan Lewis’s home. The Chairperson is listed as Lewis’s neighbor, Leonard Pappas (confirmed on the Broward County Property Appraiser site).
The Registered Agent is PA Colleen Kathryn O’Loughlin. Documents were filed by O’Loughlin on August 1st and received on August 4th.
In public documentation on the Committee Tracking System: “Please note that although Depository bank has been designated, an account has not been opened because we anticipate no monitory transactions, only in-kind contributions for reporting purposes. If we actually make or receive non in-kind transactions, we will open an account and supplement our filing.”
The first campaign treasurer’s report was due on 12-AUG-2016.
There is an $18,766.50 campaign contribution logged on 5-AUG-2016 from JNAC Communications & Management, located at 460 N. Victoria Park Road (sound familiar?) for advertising.
According to the company Facebook page … yes Facebook page, the Short Description of JNAC Communications & Management Services, LLC says: “Strategic Planning & Crisis Response Communications; “Change the story” from an adverse event. Message Development & Media Training.”
The link to http://jnaccommuniciations.com (provided on the Facebook page) brings you to an IIS-8 page. Clearly, this page is not active.
Strategic Technologies & Research Inc. is also listed under the Victoria Park address. According to the Better Business Bureau website, they are not BBB accredited. There are some public Florida Elections Commission documents available regarding a hearing involving Strategic Technologies & Research Inc., The Democracy Project. The attorney representing STAR is Colleen Kathryn O’Loughlin.
Who is Dan Lewis?
Dan Lewis is a paid political operative. That probably means that at least one of the candidates endorsed on ‘The Blue Card’ hired Lewis to be a campaign adviser / political consultant.
One of JNAC’s clients is Broward County Sheriff candidate, James Fondo who is running against incumbent, Scott Israel. As you expected, Fondo was endorsed on “The Blue Card.”
I have been repeatedly receiving robocalls for Jim Fondo where he smears Sheriff Israel. One call came in about 9:30 p.m. My caller id logged these Fondo robocalls as from Brian Kay, 954-856-8005.
Former chair of the Broward Democrats, Mitch Caesar is also represented by Lewis. He is currently running for Broward Clerk of the Circuit Court and of course, is endorsed on “The Blue Card.” Interestingly, Lewis wrote an article for Broward Beat in 2012 stating that Ceasar should retire as chair of the Broward Democrats. I guess things change as money changes hands.
In addition to Fondo and Caesar, other candidates, all endorsed by “The Blue Card” that look to have ties to Lewis include Doreen Inkeles (Broward Circuit Judge, Circuit 24), Broward County Judge candidates Rhoda Sokoloff (County 3), Brenda Di Ioia (County 7), Kim Mollica (County 14) and State Attorney candidate, Mike Satz. (As I continue my research leading up to Election Day, I will post any information I find that ties additional candidates to Lewis.)

Here’s the thing about this endorsement card. It’s pretty sleazy that they subtly make it appear that it is sanctioned by the North Broward Democratic Club and Hillary Clinton. A little research and I was able to find seven of the candidates that were tied to Lewis. Even though Lewis has stated that the endorsements on ‘The Blue Card’ are independent from his political consultant work, every candidate that I discovered that had a connection with Lewis was endorsed on the card. It makes me wonder about the rest of the candidates. I will not vote for anyone that I know that has ties to Lewis. In fact, I had originally been planning on voting for at least a couple of them before receiving this card.
